    Oleg M. NEFEDOV

Professor, President of the Higher Chemical College, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Prof. Nefedov was born in 1931. He graduated from Russian Mendeleyev's University of Chemical Technology in 1954. Having received a Ph. D. degree from the same school in 1957 he became a Professor in Organic Chemistry in N. D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry in 1967. Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1987. Professor Nefedov is the Head of Laboratory of carbene and small-ring chemistry In N. D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry RAS. His primary scientific works involve development of general approaches to synthesis of bivalent carbon, silicon and germanium compounds. With co-workers Prof. Nefedov conducted extensive studies of properties and synthesis of carbenes and their analogues, cyclopropanes and cyclopropenes as well as a number of other non-stable compounds and small rings, developped ways of low-temperature stabilization and direct specral investigation of carbenes, free radicals and unstable derivatives of silicon and germanium. Currently he is heading research programs in applied chemistry of medical products, artificial pyretroids, fluoroaromatic compounds and pheromones.

Prof. Nefedov is also the Chief Editor of "Uspekhi Khimii", "Russian Chemical Bulletin", "Mendeleyev Communications", the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Mendeleyev's University of Chemical Technology.

    Roald HOFFMANN

    Professor, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
Invited Professor of the Higher Chemical College, Member of the Board of Trustees
Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Prof. Hoffmann was born in 1937. Having graduated from Columbia University in 1958, Prof. Hoffmann received scientific degrees in 1960 and 1962 in Harvard University. He is undoubtedly one of the most prominent chemists of the scientific community. Prof. Hoffmann's theoretical studies had a profound influence on development of organic and inorganic chemistry, provided chemists by new approaches in understanding of molecular structure and reactivity. Prof. Hoffmann has been working in Cornell University (USA) for 26 years. He has a considerable number of prestigeous professional awards, including Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981.Alongside with research, Prof. Roald Hoffmann is proud of having an opportunity to teach. For him teaching and research are inseparable.Thousands of students were lucky to have taken his introductory chemistry course in Cornell University.Prof. Hoffmann's TV course "The World of Chemistry" is very popular.
